Simple, upon chilling into calcified rock easy to handle and with half the boiling temperature of cocaine hydrochloride salt, tiny amounts of water is locked in the rock. Very tiny amounts, and to get rid of tat simply crush the rock and let it dry and you are left with pure freebase (baseform cocaine). The name comes from the crackling sound oil makes when hot/boiling and water droplets come into the mix. You can test this to see yourself by heating a pan with some oil on it and drop a few drops of water onto the hot pan with hot oil: That Crackling sound oil makes when the water droplets dropin , THAT is why they call it crack, and thus why you simply crush the rock and end up with pure freebase. Another reason to do so is that oil+water boling may sprits hot drops in your eyes and face when smoking. Another advantage of doing this, is that you can easily recrystalize the pure, water drop free freebase cocaine into pure cocaine hydrochloride, described here . Note that Cocaine hydrochloride will never bee 100% in normal atmospheric conditions due to the fact it sucks moistur eout of the air, but you can achieve 95%-ish.
