2 minutes Privacy Friendly Web Analytics? Do you want to see how your website is performing but don’t want to do it in a way that invades your visitors’ privacy? I may have found a solution. This website is fairly new, I’m still learning new things about designing and deploying websites everyday. One thing I wanted to do was see how much traffic I was getting and what my most popular pages were on this site. I needed some way to collect and view data about my website, of course my first thought was Google Analytics, the most popular analytics tool on the web. BUT, there is a problem with Google Analyics, Google is not very privacy friendly, they want to know everything about you, your website, and your users. I didn’t want Google and their tracking platform anywhere near my website, so I went looking for alternatives. I did some searching around and ended up finding one solution called Plausible. It is a free and open source alternative to Google Analytics. You can host your own instance, sort of like NextCloud, but if you don’t want to deal with that you can pay a monthly or yearly fee and Plausible will take care of all that for you. I would probably go with hosting your own instance if you REALLY want to be sure your website analytics and user data are kept safe. I’m doing their free 30 day trial to see how it goes but who knows I might host my own instance later and post a tutorial. It was fairly easy to setup, just had to add a tag to make it work. This site does run on Hugo so I was wondering if there was maybe another way to implement it, turns out there is a Hugo module on Github that I could not get working which sucks, but no big deal, I just added in the script tag to my head.html file on the site. So far so good. Easy setup and easy to understand. Don’t let Google track everyone on the internet, make your website more privacy friendly. The less websites using Google services, the less effective their cross site tracking tech becomes. Make the internet a safer place by using privacy friendly analytics or… no analyics at all 0_0. 11/10/2021 Update: Removed Plausible analytics. Didn’t find it useful. My site is too small to justify keeping it. 398 Words 2021-10-19:56 Hosting a Monero Full Node →
